DIY Installation Procedure For Undermount Sink

An undermount sink can be installed using the following steps:

  • Tape Measure
  • Utility Knife
  • Caulk Gun
  • Bar Clamp
  • Safety Glasses
  • Sand Paper
  • Undermount Sink
  • Silicone Sealant
  • 2-inch x 4-inch Dimensional Lumber
  • Mounting Hardware

Step 1: Take a picture of the plumbing assembly so that it may help you later (For reconnecting and reattaching all pipes). Now, turn off the water supply and disconnect all the plumbing pipes before removing the sink. Make sure to keep a bucket under the fixtures to collect any dripping water.

Step 2: Remove the existing undermount sink by unscrewing the metal clips and cutting through the silicone, that attaches the sink to the countertop. You can use a utility knife for this purpose.

Step 3: Prepare the countertop surface from both sides by removing any silicone residues left behind, with the help of a razor scraper. Be careful to avoid damaging the countertop surface.

Step 4: Now, clean the upper and lower side of the countertop, as well as the rim of the new sink, using mineral spirit or denatured alcohol.

Step 5: Apply a bead of silicone sealant to the edge of the new sink, while placing the sink in the cabinet below the countertop cutout. Make sure to ask someone to guide you while placing the sink in the proper place from below.

Step 6: Place a 2 by 4 block on top of the sink. Place towels below each end of the block (on the countertop) to avoid scratching the countertop. Now, pass one end of the bar clamp through the drain hole of your sink.

Step 7: Place a 2 by 4 block on the underside of the sink to avoid damaging the sink from lower side. The block should be placed between the clamp and the sink. Hold the sink in place by tightening the clamp.

Step 8: Finally attach the mounting brackets.

Step 9: Clean any excess silicone left on the sink, using a damp cloth

Step 10: Remove the bar clamps 24 hours after installation of your undermount sink, so that the silicone sealant gets enough time to dry and seal the sink.

Step 11: Install the drain and re-attach the disconnected plumbing fixtures.
